Overview

Semiotics of the Bathroom is a video project that uses a unique way to introduce the Bopomofo transliteration system (commonly used in Taiwan). The video is inspired by Martha Rosler's “Semiotics of the Kitchen” (1975) and produced by AFTER HOUR.

My Role

In the AFTER HOUR team, I was the Art Director, Videographer, and Video Editor. The AFTER HOUR team is formed by three Taiwanese, Yu-Chen Lin, Amber Yuan, and I, the objective of the team is to produce something fun and free spirit in our after-work hours.

Story Behind the Scene

Three Taiwanese visited SUNY New Paltz Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art on a road trip during the 2017 Labor Day weekend, and we saw Martha Rosler's “Semiotics of the Kitchen” (1975).

Martha Rosler introduced the A to Z alphabet with kitchen appliances. Corresponding to the Western alphabets, the common symbol we use in Taiwan is called Bopomofo which has 37 symbols. So, instead of kitchen appliances, we used bathroom items to introduce each Bopomofo symbol.
